The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, has shown that the member countries should prepare for the long-term war that Russia is preparing in order to be able to win it.
NATO is made up of 32 countries across the Atlantic, including the United States, Germany, Great Britain and France, all of which have pledged to help in the event of an attack. Rutte on December 12, 2024 announced that during the Cold War, member countries invested 3% of their gross domestic product in the military, so that they would not have an unexpected enemy.
Tensions have again soured between NATO members and Russia, the former Soviet Union, as a result of the conflict over Ukraine, which is considered a key ally of the alliance.
Rutte pointed out that the current military budget of the NATO countries is low, and he asked that it be increased because the organization is stronger than ever.
He said: “Russia is planning a long-term war on Ukraine with us. We are not ready for what will happen in four or five years. It's time to have a wartime mentality, and let's talk about our military output and investment."
NATO leaders agreed to cut military budgets in 2014 after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
It is now agreed that in the next year it should not go below 2% of the global production.
