The United States Assistant Secretary for Africa, Molly Phee, announced that Uhuru Kenyatta, who led Kenya, has decided to unite the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the M23 armed group.

Phee gave this message after the talks that were supposed to bring together President Paul Kagame, Félix Tshisekedi and João Lourenço in Luanda on December 15, 2024 were postponed due to the fact that the Government of DRC refused to talk with M23.

That day, President Lourenço, Tshisekedi and Uhuru met for talks in Luanda, looking together at how peace and stability would return to the eastern part of the DRC.

One of the topics they discussed, as it is said, is that the talks between the State of RDC and the armed groups operating in the east of this country would be resumed; it would be possible for the M23 to be restored.

In a press conference, Phee announced that after Uhuru decided to hold talks between the M23 and the DRC, the East African Community (EAC) agreed to put it in the hands of the African Union.

He said, “President Kenyatta has agreed to help organize talks between the M23 and the RDC.

The EAC supported this, agreeing that the responsibility for solving the problems of armed groups in eastern DRC should be transferred to the AU. President Kenyatta last weekend was in Luanda.”

M23 once participated in the talks in Nairobi in April 2022, and was kicked out by President Tshisekedi's representative, when he accused it of a lack of fighting, he replied that it was a lie.

The government of the DRC continues to be asked to negotiate with this group to jointly solve the problems that threaten the security of the east of the DRC.
