The National Authority for Civil Airports, RAC, announced that planes using the Kigali International Airport are allowed to use the airspace of the City of Kigali when flying, especially in case of bad weather.
These changes were announced on Monday, December 2, 2024.
It means that if necessary, planes that want to land in Kanombe can use different directions in the air of the City of Kigali.
Usually all the planes that want to land at the Kigali International Airport used the direction from the Masaka airport without any other option.
This was an obstacle especially when there was bad weather. Athan Tashobya, Director of Communications at the National Civil Airports Authority, RAC, told IGIHE that these changes are aimed at facilitating flights to Kigali.
He said, “Most of the time it was passenger planes coming from Masaka, it is very rare to see passenger planes from Jali or Rebero, and landing from Masaka is difficult especially when there is fog.
Allowing landing planes from Jali or Rebero is meant to make it easier.
” Kigali International Airport is the largest airport in Rwanda. In July 2022, the modernization work was completed, leaving it with the capacity to receive more than 50 planes in good condition.
The airport has a 3.5 km long runway, which, once renovated, is expected to increase passenger traffic from 1.2 million in 2019/2020 to two million in 2022/2023.
