The African Development Bank, BAD, has approved a loan of 100 million US dollars (138.8 billion Frw) to the Government of Rwanda to help it develop the public transport system in the city of Kigali.
The Government of Rwanda has a project to reform public transport services in Kigali, in order to solve the problems faced by passengers, who are waiting for cars for a long time.
This situation makes some passengers decide to hire a motorbike, paying more than what they would have paid for public transport. BAD announced that the number of motorcyclists has decreased, instead of increasing, because motorcyclists are one of the main causes of accidents in Kigali and other cities. Director of BAD in Rwanda, Aïssa Touré Sarr, said: “This investment will help to remove obstacles and obstacles to passenger transport services in the city of Kigali, and pave the way for sustainable transportation, improvement and reduction of air pollution.
” The project also includes a plan to renovate the infrastructure used in this service, such as stationary bicycles and street parking, where passengers will wait.
It is planned that the places where passengers wait for cars and bicycles will be searched so that they will not be stolen, and everyone will be safe, especially pregnant, lactating mothers and the disabled.
The population and housing census conducted in Rwanda in 2022 shows that until that year, Kigali had a population of 1.74 million.
Statistics show that by 2050, they may reach 3.8 million.
