10 MPs from North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo wrote to President Félix Tshisekedi, informing him that their Governor, Gen Maj Peter Cirimwami, has imposed illegal taxes. These MPs said that Governor Cirimwami imposed these taxes due to the extraordinary situation in North Kivu province since May 2021.
They also explained to President Tshisekedi that Governor Cirimwami committed other crimes including financial crimes and misuse of public places, and they asked him to take action against him.
They said, "At a time when North Kivu was suffering from the effects of armed conflicts and crimes committed in the city, Governor Cirimwami is imposing other taxes without any legal basis. It is part of the special situation, where additional taxes are sometimes collected in a way that we consider inappropriate, under the pretext of necessity."
As reported by 7 Sur 7 newspaper, these MPs asked their colleagues to agree, warning that they plan to take extensive measures in North Kivu, so that the people will be given back their rights.
Governor Cirimwami recently announced that there are people who want to arrest him, with the aim of getting North Kivu out of special circumstances.
What happened is that he is ready to leave this role if Tshisekedi approves it.
