In a recent turn of events, the Russian government has firmly denied allegations linking it to the ongoing hunger protests in Nigeria. This statement comes amid increasing scrutiny and speculation regarding Russia's role in various political upheavals across West Africa. The Russian government asserts that these claims are part of a coordinated media campaign orchestrated by Western and Ukrainian officials aimed at interfering in Nigeria’s internal affairs and shifting responsibility for any fallout onto Russia.

In a letter addressed to the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was made public by Yury Paramonov, the Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria, the government expressed its discontent with remarks made by notable figures, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former Director of the British Council in Nigeria David Roberts, and Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko. These officials suggested that the display of Russian flags by some protesters during the recent #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria demonstrations was indicative of Russian interference in Nigeria.

The protests, which took place in August, saw demonstrators voicing their frustrations over governance and economic hardships. The sightings of Russian flags during these events sparked considerable controversy, leading to speculation about external influences in the protests. This incident has further fueled concerns about Russia's alleged involvement in political transitions in several West African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where military coups have recently occurred. These nations have significantly shifted their foreign policy, distancing themselves from France and seeking closer ties with Russia, raising alarm among Western nations.

In response to the allegations surrounding the Nigerian protests, the Russian government emphasized its commitment to respecting Nigeria's sovereignty. The letter from the embassy categorically rejected the accusations, stating, “The Russian Federation neither had any involvement in the protests that occurred in the recent past nor does it have any connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest.”

Russia has consistently maintained a policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states, contrasting this with what it describes as a coordinated media effort by Western and Ukrainian officials to undermine Russia’s relationship with Nigeria. The embassy reiterated its support for peaceful dialogue within a legal framework as the appropriate means to address any internal disputes in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the letter highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship between Russia and Nigeria, expressing a desire for continued cooperation and deepening ties between the two countries. The embassy also conveyed congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s National Day, wishing prosperity and stability for the Nigerian people and government.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact Nigeria's political landscape and its international relationships. The Russian government's strong denial and calls for mutual respect highlight the delicate nature of diplomatic relations in the context of current global tensions.
