The civil society leadership of the Itombwe group announced that thousands of people in Mwenga territory in South Kivu province were displaced due to the fierce battle between the RED Tabara rebels and the Burundian army.
These people fled to Itombe forests and others to Kitope and Kipupu areas. Those from the Civil Society of Itombwe Group, announced that there is no security in the community and many of them are still missing, while others were lost in the forests due to lack of shelter.
In a statement released by the Red Tabara rebels at the end of last week, they said that in the last week of fighting between them and Burundi and Mai Mai, they killed 45 Burundian soldiers and their allies, and injured 32 others.
The spokesperson of the Burundian army, Baratuza Gaspard, shared this information through his X wall.
He said, “RED Tabara has lost power after losing a lot in this war. It made him hasten to issue a comforting announcement that cites other people's figures [FDNB] instead of quoting his own figures or the truth about what happened in Itombwe and Mwenga.”
He continued, "This announcement of theirs is to try to comfort themselves and see how they can entice people to join instead of bowing to those who are not."

The Burundian army is operating in South Kivu based on the agreement that the government of this country made with the RDC in 2023. The purpose of this is to fight groups including RED Tabara.
