The Rwanda National Institute of Statistics, in collaboration with its partners, including the African Development Bank, is working to analyze data from previously untapped sources, such as Mobile Money transactions, social media activity, and weather information.

The institute's director explained that while traditional population surveys have been the main source of data, evolving technology has introduced new streams of information that need to be incorporated into national planning. For instance, Mobile Money transactions provide insights into the expansion of the economy, offering a real-time flow of significant financial data.

Additionally, the study aims to assess the economic impact of various events, including natural disasters like floods and droughts, and how these are reflected through social media and mobile platforms.

One motorcycle taxi driver expressed concern that not all money transferred through Mobile Money reflects personal income, as many people transfer funds on behalf of others. He worried that being taxed based on these transactions could be unfair.

The institute assured that their goal is to analyze such data carefully, ensuring accuracy in how it reflects the country's economic growth without misinterpretation. The collaboration with international organizations seeks to improve the use of emerging data sources in a way that benefits national development without negatively impacting citizens.
