In Eldoret, Kenya, long-distance running star Samson Kandie was tragically killed in his home by unidentified attackers. His body was found tied up with ropes around his arms and legs, according to his daughter.
Kandie had participated in several prestigious marathons over the years, including the Vienna Marathon in 2004 and the Berlin Marathon. He was attacked in his house located in the Elgon View area of Eldoret. His family later discovered his body behind the outdoor restroom on his property.
His daughter, Vienna Kandie, expressed deep sorrow and confusion over her father's death. She explained that they did not live together, and when her mother called him on Friday evening, he mentioned that he was heading home. However, when he failed to arrive, the family grew concerned. When they called his phone again, another person answered, telling them that Kandie’s body was behind the outdoor restroom.
Vienna described the heartbreaking scene, saying that her father was brutally beaten and left tied up. Though they rushed him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
The news has shaken the running community in Kenya. Fellow athlete Ezekiel Kemboi urged the government to enhance the security of athletes, who are often targeted by criminals. He noted that this is not an isolated incident, with several athletes falling victim to violence in recent times.
Kandie’s death follows that of other notable athletes, including Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan runner who was killed by her husband in Kenya in September 2024, and Benjamin Kiplagat, another Ugandan runner who was murdered in January 2024.
This series of violent incidents has left many calling for immediate action to protect athletes in the region.
