Farmers in Nyarubaka, Kamonyi, who received training on how to capitalize on local opportunities, have started selling their avocado produce both locally and internationally, resulting in significant financial gains.
Some of these farmers grow Hass and Fuerte avocado varieties. Their group now exports avocados to international markets, with members confident that they will continue to build on their successes. One farmer reported that they now have over 700 avocado trees, and thanks to support, their avocados are reaching global markets, earning them income in foreign currencies.
He noted that from one harvest, they can earn up to 1.5 million Rwandan francs, with expectations to export up to four tons of avocados per year. Each avocado sells for over 80 francs.
Another resident, who has been engaged in beekeeping for four years, mentioned that he now harvests around 30 kilograms of honey per month, with each kilogram selling for 5,000 francs. This allows him to pay for his children's education, even through university.
The local administration acknowledges the positive impact of these initiatives, which include agriculture, beekeeping, and other economic ventures. Farmers have received irrigation equipment and tools, and local markets have been developed to help them sell their produce efficiently. Families that were previously struggling have seen improved living conditions, and the community is hopeful that these gains will continue.
The initiative has also focused on improving family relationships and creating opportunities for young girls. Additionally, families have received livestock, such as egg-laying hens, which contribute to their livelihoods and help combat malnutrition.
The success of this program shows that local farmers are eager to embrace modern farming techniques and improve their livelihoods. The focus on sustainable agriculture and community development aims to ensure lasting improvements in the region.
