Eight people lost their lives in a military helicopter crash in Colombia during a medical relief operation in the eastern region of Vichada. The tragic event was confirmed by Colombia's President, Gustavo Petro.
The helicopter, identified as a Huey II with the registration FAC-4441, lost communication shortly before the crash. Colombia’s Air Force had earlier announced that contact with the helicopter had been lost.
Search and rescue operations were immediately launched to locate the helicopter and assist the crew. Reports indicated that among the victims were high-ranking military officers and technical personnel.
Preliminary investigations into the crash, which occurred on September 30, 2024, pointed to adverse weather conditions as a potential cause.
President Gustavo Petro expressed condolences to the families of the victims, stating that this was a time for national solidarity. He emphasized that the entire country mourned the loss of those who perished in the accident.
The wreckage was eventually located in the Cumaribo region, with no survivors found at the scene. Images showed the helicopter severely damaged, lying in tall grass, following its loss of communication while in flight.
