Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has decided to re-establish Dar es Salaam as an independent city four years after former President John Magufuli stopped it.

This week, the Minister of Local Government, Mohamed Mchengerwa, confirmed that President Samia asked the government to re-establish Dar es Salaam as an independent city by 2025.

Minister Mchengerwa said that the Government, after realizing that it will require a higher capacity, is looking for investors who will help it develop some areas that have been left behind.

The main goal of making Dar es Salaam an independent city is to develop it as one of the cities that attract more tourists and different investors.

Dar es Salaam has a population of about 5.4 million people, making it the most populous city in Tanzania.

In November 2021, Magufuli suspended the city committee saying that it was not using the budget that includes taxes, and turned it into one of Ilala County's sectors because it was also where most of the political and business activities were conducted.

The suspension of the administration, led to it going into the hands of other agencies and sometimes the development plans of the city were not accelerated.

These changes come in the context of improving mobility, better services and making the city once again an important international level in business and tourism.
