The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that it is in communication with health officials in Rwanda regarding an outbreak of the Marburg virus.
Rwanda is currently managing 26 confirmed cases of the virus, a severe hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola, with six fatalities reported so far.
Rwandan health authorities first informed the World Health Organization about the outbreak last week. Cases have been identified in seven of the country's 30 districts, and efforts are underway to contain the virus.
WHO officials emphasized the swift response to support Rwanda in controlling the spread of the virus, highlighting the nation's established public health emergency systems and ongoing collaboration with international health agencies.
