The BDP (Botswana Democratic Party) has been in power for 58 years in Botswana, and has lost the parliamentary elections.
The interim results announced by the Electoral Commission on November 1, 2024 showed that the UDC (Umbrella for Democratic Change), which is opposed to the administration of President Mokgweetsi Masisi, has won an absolute majority of seats in the Assembly.
This Commission revealed that out of 61 seats in the Botswana Parliament, UDC got 35 seats, BDP and other parties shared the remaining seats.
The Constitution of Botswana provides that the party that obtains an absolute majority of seats in the House appoints the President and the government.
This means that Duma Boko, who leads the UDC, replaces President Masisi in power. Analysts point out that BDP's loss of confidence stems from the fact that Botswana's economy is lagging behind and unemployment has reached 27%, mostly among the youth.
The BDP, which has been ruling Botswana since 1966, had promised the people that in order to revive the economy, it planned to invest in agriculture and tourism, but it was in vain.
