The United Nations has reported over 350,000 Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers registered for protection in North Africa so far this year. Additionally, since last April, 97,000 migrants have entered Libya.

Sivanka Dhanapala, director at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, emphasized the need for a comprehensive, cross-regional approach that addresses the root causes of these journeys, not just the challenges in North Africa.

From January to August of this year, it is estimated that over 134,000 refugees and migrants attempted to reach Europe by sea from North and West Africa, reflecting a slight decrease from the previous year.

Par Liljert, director at the International Organization for Migration, also highlighted the need for urgent action to address the factors driving migration and the immense challenges faced along migration routes.
