Trump Slaps 50% Tariff on India Over Russian Oil Purchases

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order slapping an extra 25% tariff on Indian goods in retaliation for its continued imports of Russian oil.

This move will push the total US tariff on Indian products to a steep 50%, you ranking among the highest trade penalties Washington has ever imposed.

As per the executive order, the new tariff rate will take effect in 21 days, landing on 27 August.

India’s foreign ministry, responding on Wednesday, said New Delhi had previously stated its position regarding Russian imports and called the new tariff “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.

“It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,” the brief statement said.

“India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” it added.

President Trump had earlier cautioned about the move, accusing India of ignoring the human toll in Ukraine: “India doesn’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine.”
