South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie, known for being outspoken against racism, is now facing accusations of racism himself, claims he strongly denies.
Viewed by many as a voice for the frustrations of the country’s coloured community, the census term for people of mixed heritage in South Africa, McKenzie has long been a polarising figure.
But resurfaced social media posts in which he used a highly offensive words directed at black people have triggered a political storm.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has given him until the end of Wednesday to respond, demanding that he remove the posts, issue a public apology, and meet other requirements.
