Macron Admits France Waged War in Cameroon During Independence Era

In a historic acknowledgment, French President Emmanuel Macron has recognized that France fought a war in Cameroon during the nation’s struggle for independence, according to a document released on Tuesday.

In a letter dated July 30 to Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, Macron accepted responsibility for acts of repressive violence carried out against insurgent movements in the country.

He noted that these acts occurred both before and after Cameroon’s independence in 1960.

This marks the first time France has officially used the term “war” to characterize its actions in Cameroon during that era.
