Tems Opens Up on Gender Bias in the Afropop Industry

Nigerian Afropop sensation Tems has told the BBC that “people don’t really respect women” in the music industry.

The two time Grammy award winner revealed that at the start of her career, she found it difficult to be taken seriously.

“I realised that there’s always a cost. There’s always a price that you pay. And a lot of those prices I wasn’t willing to pay and there wasn’t a lot of options,” Tems said.

Afropop has seen massive global growth over the last decade, yet it remains heavily male dominated.

The industry’s “Big Three” : Burna Boy, Davido, and Wizkid are all men, while leading female artists like Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade have also spoken about the obstacles they face because of their gender.
