Former Mali Prime Minister Moussa Mara Faces Trial Amid Crackdown on Dissent

Mali’s former Prime Minister Moussa Mara is set to appear in court on September 29 to face charges of undermining the state’s credibility, his lawyer announced on Friday.

He is also accused of spreading false information. These accusations came shortly after Mara was questioned by a judicial cybercrimes unit for his action. In July, he was summoned multiple times over a social media post in which he showed support for jailed critics of the government.

Since the military took power in 2020, human rights organizations have raised concerns over the narrowing democratic space in Mali.

The ruling junta has banned political parties and detained several activists in an apparent effort to silence opposition regarding its human rights abuses, failure in handling the Islamist insurgency, and repeated delays in organizing elections.

Mara, who briefly held the position of Prime Minister in 2015, has remained outspoken against the military-led administration.
