In the remote, northeastern region of Karamoja, Uganda, deep-rooted cultural norms and cycles of conflict have long sidelined the voices of women. Yet, amidst these structural challenges, Jesca Ruth Ataa has emerged as a beacon of resilience and a powerful force for social change. As a dedicated Ugandan human rights defender, Ataa has spent over two decades confronting systemic inequalities, domestic violence, and political instability. Her grassroots leadership proves that sustainable peace and regional development can only be achieved when women are given a seat at the table.
At the heart of Ataa’s transformative impact is the Nakere Rural Women Activists (NARWOA), a community-based organization she leads in Kotido District. Founded in 2002, NARWOA derives its name from a traditional tree where women historically gathered to discuss ending local cattle raids and armed conflicts. Under Ataa’s stewardship, the organization has grown from a localized peacebuilding initiative into a robust support network. Today, it addresses the intersection of physical conflict, domestic abuse, and the economic marginalization of women across the sub-region.
Ataa’s advocacy heavily emphasizes economic independence as a shield against gender-based violence. She remains a vocal opponent of customary practices that deny women fundamental land and inheritance rights, arguing that restricting women from controlling financial assets traps families in cycles of poverty. Through targeted agricultural and agribusiness programs, NARWOA has successfully improved food security and household incomes for rural families. To date, her life-changing initiatives have directly reached more than 15,000 women and 250,000 children across Karamoja.
Her tireless, often perilous work on the frontlines of community mediation has not gone unnoticed by the international community. On May 2, 2024, Ataa was formally recognized and shortlisted for the prestigious EU Human Rights Defenders Award in Uganda. This global spotlight validates her profound sacrifices and underscores a universal truth embedded in her mission: when grassroots changemakers are supported, entire communities rise. Jesca Ruth Ataa continues to demonstrate that true peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice and equality for all.
