A South African radio personality along with four co-accused has been released on bail by the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Nonkululeko Mantula, 39, was taken into custody alongside four men following an intelligence tip. Authorities revealed that three of the suspects were intercepted at the airport while attempting to board a flight to Russia through the UAE.
Another suspect is believed to have already made it to Russia.
The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that the State did not challenge their release on bail.
“We consulted with the investigating officer and were told there were no solid grounds to oppose,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority.
In a separate matter, police are also probing Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma over allegations she recruited 17 South African men to fight as mercenaries for Russia.
South African law prohibits citizens from joining foreign armies without government approval.
The five recently arrested suspects have been held in detention since last week.
The case is scheduled to continue on 10 February 2026, pending further investigation.
