DRC: 12 journalists killed under Tshisekedi's regime
The Journalist in Danger (JED) 2025 report found that the lives of journalists in the Democratic Republic of Congo are in danger, with 12 killed since 2019.
The report, released on November 22, 2025, shows that between 2001 and 2018, 15 journalists were killed and two disappeared under Kabila’s regime.
Under Tshisekedi’s regime, from 2019 to November 2025, 12 journalists were killed and four disappeared.
The report shows that killings and disappearances of journalists have increased under Tshisekedi’s regime compared to Kabila’s regime.
The number of journalists imprisoned has increased, with 24 imprisoned between 2001 and 2018, while 28 have been imprisoned since 2019.
It emphasizes that press freedom remains “at risk” as those who plan and execute these crimes continue to walk free and face no accountability.
Non-governmental organizations in Congo have called for an end to the killings and for press freedom to be respected.
