A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Kigali





A 4.8 magnitude earthquake has been felt in various parts of Rwanda, including Kigali City.

It was also felt in Burundi, and in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It was felt at around 9:12 AM.

An earthquake with a magnitude of between 4.0 and 5.0 is considered mild. However, it can cause damage to certain objects near the point of origin.

It can shake buildings, windows and other small objects. It can cause the walls of a house to collapse.

Such an earthquake can also cause landslides on steep slopes, which can damage fragile objects such as plates, drinking glasses that can fall.

The last earthquake in Rwanda was a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on November 11, 2025 at 10:39 AM. It was felt in western Rwanda.

On July 28, 2025, at 9:38 am, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Lake Tanganyika.

On the night of May 4, 2025, another earthquake struck. At that time, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Lake Albert, followed by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake seven minutes later.

Until now, the longest earthquake in Rwanda was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake on March 20, 1966, the strongest in over 100 years.

The last major earthquake in the region where Rwanda is located was in 2021 when the Nyiragongo volcano erupted, forcing residents to flee.
