The Electoral Commission of Uganda has announced that 2,025 candidates will contest for 353 seats in the country’s National Assembly.
This was announced by the Electoral Commission’s Deputy Spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, who said that there were 83,597 candidates vying for 45,505 seats across the country.
He said, “In total, we have 83,597 candidates vying for 45,505 seats across all levels, from the presidency to the local government.”
He continued by saying that out of 523 district leadership positions contested by them, 146 were contested, while 610 were contested for women’s leadership positions in the district.
This is in the run-up to the elections, which are preceded by campaigning activities that have already begun, with the actual elections to be held in January 2026.
In late September 2025, when campaigning for the presidential elections began in Uganda, activists of Bobi Wine’s NUP party and other supporters often clashed with security forces, with some being arrested.
Bukenya appealed to the public and all relevant institutions to conduct the elections and campaign activities peacefully.
Presidential elections in Uganda will be held on January 15, 2025.
