Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has confirmed longtime leader Paul Biya, the world’s oldest president, as the winner of the country’s latest election.
Tension flared ahead of Monday’s announcement, with violent clashes between protesters and security forces leaving at least four people dead as opposition supporters demanded fair results.
Biya, 92, who has ruled the Central African nation since 1982, was declared the winner with 53.66% of the votes. His main challenger and former ally, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, came second with 35.19%, according to the top court’s official tally.
