600 Meta employees to be laid off

Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang has announced that the company will cut 600 of its R&D and R&D staff.

Wang announced the decision in a memo to employees on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.

“By reducing our workforce, we will have fewer conversations about decision-making, and each person who remains will have more responsibility and the ability to contribute to our mission,” Wang said.

Meta has been reducing its workforce for some time, which its management describes as a way to achieve higher productivity and lower waste.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said that “working with fewer people is good,” suggesting that a smaller workforce is in the best interests of the company.

As OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other companies continue to compete to build powerful AI systems, Meta has been no stranger to recruiting experts in the field.

It recently secured 50 experts in the field on lucrative contracts, poaching them from other competing companies.

This suggests that the company is looking to hire fewer, more capable employees. Meta said that those who are about to be laid off will likely find jobs in other parts of the company.
