Uganda’s presidential campaigns began on Monday, setting the stage for a tense contest between long serving President Yoweri Museveni and his main challenger, Bobi Wine, in what looks like a repeat of the 2021 showdown.
The electoral commission has issued an official campaign timetable for all eight candidates, ensuring rallies are coordinated across the country to avoid clashes.
Both Museveni and Bobi Wine were cleared last week to officially join the race.
At 81, Museveni is seeking another term under the National Resistance Movement (NRM), extending his nearly 40 year rule. Back in 2017, lawmakers scrapped the constitutional presidential age limit, allowing him to contest indefinitely.
Speaking at a press briefing last week, Museveni pointed to his past achievements and promised fresh investments in education, infrastructure, and health.
However, critics continue to accuse his government of human rights abuses and silencing opponents.
On the other hand, Bobi Wine symbolizes a demand for change. The singer turned politician secured 35% of the votes in the last election in 2021, finishing second to Museveni.
