Music mogul Don Jazzy has shared the story of how he found and signed fast rising star Ayra Starr.
In a recent interview, he revealed that he first saw her on Instagram posts and was immediately impressed by her potential.
Don Jazzy explained that he reached out to a Gen Z contact, asking if they knew anyone around their school or circle with raw singing talent. The contact then sent him several Instagram profiles, one of which was Ayra Starr’s page.
What truly caught his eye, he said, was a freestyle video Ayra posted where she touched on themes that spoke directly to Gen Z experiences.
According to Don Jazzy, he was captivated by her youthful energy and the refreshing vibe she brought to Afrobeat. Without wasting time, he sent her a message introducing himself and expressing interest in working with her.
Although Ayra didn’t reply right away, he also reached out to her brother to help establish communication.
He added: “I don’t know whether it’s a genius idea or not. It just felt like the industry needed it, you know what I’m saying. For somebody like Ayra, there was a space for a young teenage Afrobeat superstar from Nigeria that we want to make sure becomes global. So it was very intentional.”
