Putin Strengthens Russia-Congo Ties During Beijing WWII Anniversary Events

During the 80th anniversary commemorations of World War II in Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Denis Sassou-Nguesso, President of the Republic of Congo.

The meeting came after a grand military parade in the Chinese capital and formed part of Putin’s wider diplomatic engagements at the event.

“We meet each other regularly. Our work with Congo is one of the priorities of our foreign policy in Africa. Congo is our reliable and time tested partner,” Putin remarked during their discussions.

The talks highlight the growing partnership between Moscow and Brazzaville. Earlier in May, Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov held a meeting with Congo’s Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Charles Mondjo, to boost military cooperation, describing it as the driving force of their “traditionally friendly” relations.
