More than two months after government forces regained control of Khartoum, Sudan’s cabinet has convened its first meeting in the capital.
Presided over by the new transitional prime minister, Kamal Idris, the session was hailed by state media as a “symbolic step toward the restoration of state institutions” in the city.
Since the outbreak of the civil war in April 2023, the government had been forced to operate out of Port Sudan. Officials now plan to fully relocate back to Khartoum starting in October.
During the meeting, the 22 ministers outlined their priorities for the year ahead and discussed strategies for advancing peace across the country.
Prime Minister Idris highlighted that the top goals include post war reconstruction, economic recovery, improving security, and encouraging the voluntary return of displaced citizens.
