Saudi Arabia, the United States, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have jointly proposed a three month humanitarian truce in Sudan, to be followed by a permanent ceasefire.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the so called Quad nations urged the launch of a nine month transitional process after the truce, aimed at paving the way for a civilian led government.
“There is no viable military solution to the conflict, and the status quo creates unacceptable suffering and risks to peace and security,” the ministers declared.
Sudan has been trapped in civil war since April 2023, when clashes between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces escalated into full scale fighting. The war has unleashed one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters, leaving around 40,000 people dead and forcing more than 12 million to flee their homes. Millions still inside the country face extreme hunger and the threat of famine.
