Routine visa services at the United States embassy in Zimbabwe have been suspended, with officials citing national security and public safety as it’s major reason for this action.
The order to pause consular operations was issued directly from Washington. This suspension does not affect Zimbabweans who already possess valid and recognized U.S. visa.
Back in June, an internal State Department memo pointed out the possibility of imposing visa restrictions on additional African nations. The concerns centered on unreliable identity documents, weak passport security, and the refusal or reluctance of some countries to accept deported citizens.
Zimbabwe appeared on that list, alongside Kenya, Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria. That same month, the United States brought up a travel ban on Chad, Congo Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan.
It also increased travel restrictions for citizens from Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
