At least 370 people have been killed in a massive landslide that struck the remote Marra Mountains in Sudan’s Darfur region, with the UN confirming it is sending urgent assistance to survivors.
Luca Renda, the acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, told reporters that rescuers, food, and other aid were being dispatched, adding that a clearer picture of the disaster would emerge soon.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), the armed group controlling the affected area, claimed the death toll could be as high as 1,000. A local rescue team has so far recovered nine bodies.
Triggered by days of heavy rainfall, the landslide hit on Sunday, wiping out much of the village of Tarseen and leaving only one known survivor.
