Ukraine Set to Ban Orthodox Church Over Moscow Ties

Ukrainian authorities have announced that a branch of the Orthodox Church has not broken away from its deep rooted ties with Moscow, and may soon face a ban.

The potential ban targets one of the two competing branches of Orthodoxy in Ukraine, highlighting the tense role of religion as the country continues to resist Russia’s invasion. Orthodoxy remains a dominant faith in both Russia and Ukraine, often becoming a cultural and spiritual cause of broader conflict.

This development comes a year after Ukraine’s Parliament approved a law outlawing the Moscow based Russian Orthodox Church, which openly backed Russia’s war.

The legislation also gave the government power to outlaw any religious body linked to the Russian church. Following that, officials launched an investigation into the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, long tied to Moscow through centuries of shared history.
