Authorities in northern Nigeria are still searching for around 25 passengers who remain unaccounted for after a boat mishap in Sokoto state on Sunday, a local councillor confirmed.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema), the boat was carrying more than 50 people on their way to a local market when it overturned on the River Goronyo.
Councillor Aminu Bare said that so far, 25 people have been rescued alive as the search operations continued into Monday.
Earlier, Nema announced it was stepping up efforts in collaboration with local authorities to find those still missing.
Boat tragedies are sadly frequent in Nigeria, often linked to overloading, poorly serviced boats, and weak enforcement of safety rules.
