The DRC government has increased its military spending to retake areas captured by the AFC/M23

The Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Judith Suminwa Tuluka, informed the National Assembly that in 2026 the government will invest 5.19 billion dollars in the military, police and other security agencies.

Suminwa explained that the budget allocated to the security agencies is being increased in order to build their capacity to recover the areas lost by the AFC/M23 coalition in the east of the country.

He said, “The government, led by the Commander-in-Chief of our national army, still wants to recover all the parts of the country’s territory that are in the hands of the enemy.”

It is expected that the money will be used to train soldiers and other security personnel, provide them with professional training, purchase military equipment, build military infrastructure and modernize outdated ones.

Overall, the DRC Government has estimated that the total budget for 2026 will be 59,021 billion Congolese francs, equivalent to 25.75 billion US dollars.

It appears that other sectors will continue to be heavily burdened by security, as has been the case since the war intensified in early 2022, as infrastructure, agriculture and industry have been allocated $5.22 billion, education has been allocated $2.9 billion, and health has been allocated $2.43 billion.

The DRC government explains that there will be no gap in investment in sectors other than security, given that the budget has been increased by 16% compared to 2025, which was $22.12 billion.
