On the morning of this Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Tanzanians went to the polls for the presidential election.
It is an election expected to have a high turnout as over 37 million Tanzanians, including 200,000 living abroad, have registered to vote. The schedule indicates that the exercise began at 4:00 AM this morning and will end at 10:00 PM, with the results of the elections to be announced within 72 hours.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is competing for the position of President against 16 candidates, including Kunje Ngombale of the AAFP party, Hassan Almas, a representative of the NRA, Coaster Kibonde of Chama Cha Makini, Doyo Hassan Doyo of the NLD and other opposition figures.
Suluhu of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party is given the advantage, as these elections have seen many of the opposition parties imprisoned, including Tundu Lissu of the CHADEMA party.
The Tanzanian Electoral Commission has announced that all preparations are in order, and the elections are peaceful.
The elections are expected to be monitored by observers from the East African Community, including the Vice President of the National Electoral Commission in Rwanda, Habimana Kizito.
Samia Suluhu Hassan, 65, became Tanzania’s first female President in 2021, following the sudden death of Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, who had just begun his second term.
