Rwanda has confirmed that the first group of seven people deported from the United States arrived in the country in mid-August, following an agreement with Washington.
According to a government spokesperson, each case was carefully reviewed under the bilateral deal, which allows Kigali to assess and approve migrants before they are admitted.
While the identities of the deportees were not disclosed, government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said on Thursday that they are currently “accommodated by an international organisation.”
She added that the group is being visited by the International Organization for Migration as well as officials from Rwanda’s social services.
Those cleared to settle in Rwanda will also be provided with accommodation, health care, and workforce training to help them integrate, Makolo noted
