The Sagrada Família Basilica has become the tallest church in the world after workers placed the first part of a cross on the top of its tower.
It now stands at 162.91 meters, surpassing the Ulm Minster in Germany, which had been the tallest church since 1890.
It was designed by Antoni Gaudí, a famous architect. Located in the heart of Barcelona, it has been under construction for over a century, and is expected to be completed next year.
The tower, named after Jesus Christ, will grow even taller when more parts of the cross are added in the coming months, reaching a height of 172 meters.
The first stone of the Sagrada Família was laid in 1882.
Gaudí, who began construction in 1882, transformed the previously planned design into a complex and ambitious project, initially funded by donations from Christians.
He died in 1926, by which time only one of the planned 18 floors had been completed.
In the following years, construction of this extraordinary building continued under the direction of the Sagrada Família Association, which relied on donations from foreigners, visitors, and donors
