Rwanda Rejects UN Allegations of Involvement in Congo Civilian Killings

On Monday, Rwanda dismissed UN claims as “false”. The claims stated that its troops participated alongside rebels in the massacre of several hundred civilians in eastern Congo.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), firsthand testimonies indicate that M23 rebels killed at least 319 civilians during a series of assaults on four villages in North Kivu province in July. The killings reportedly occurred on farms in Rutshuru territory between July 9 and July 21.

The UN agency alleged that Rwandan forces provided support to the rebels.

In a statement issued by the foreign affairs ministry on Monday, Kigali denounced the accusation as “unacceptable,” accusing the UN rights body, without presenting evidence of attempting to undermine ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in eastern Congo.
