The four-day African Cycling Championships in Ukunda, Kenya, concluded on Sunday, November 23, 2025, with Rwanda finishing in third place with 11 medals, including two gold.
The 19th edition of the Championships was attended by 30 countries represented by athletes in categories including men, women and under-23, under-19 and under-17 in both categories.
This Sunday, when it was concluded, there were road races in the men’s and boys’ under-23 and under-19 categories, and all victories went home to Eritrea.
In the men’s 163.8 km race, Merhawi Kudus won the gold medal, tied with his teammate Aman Awet in three hours, 53 minutes and six seconds, five seconds behind Algerian Mimouni Oussama Abdellah.
Rwandan Niyonkuru Samuel finished fourth, 13 seconds behind, while Mugisha Moïse came sixth, 16 seconds behind.
This good performance saw Niyonkuru Samuel finish third in the under-23 category, winning the Bronze medal, behind Aman Awet who won the Gold and Mimoumi who won the Silver.
This medal, which came on the last day, saw Rwanda finish with 11 medals, third among the countries that won the most medals, led by South Africa who won six, including four Gold, and Eritrea who won 10, including three Gold and five Silver.
Rwanda, on the other hand, won two Gold medals, won by Akimana Donatha in the under-17 category and Nyirarukundo Claudette in the under-23 category, both in the road races.
There were also five silver medals, including those of Team Rwanda in the mixed boys and girls team, Nyirarukundo Claudette, Masengesho Yvonne and two for Mwamikazi Jazilla.
Four Bronze medals were won by Masengesho Yvonne, Nyirarukundo Claudette, Nirere Xaveline and Niyonkuru Samuel.
At this year’s African Cycling Championships, Rwanda was represented by 23 athletes.
In 2024, it won four medals in Kenya with 20 athletes while in 2023, Team Rwanda won eight medals in Accra, Ghana.
