Ruto's advisers' salaries spark outrage in Kenya
Members of the Kenyan Parliament have expressed their incomprehension over how President William Ruto's advisers are being paid 1 million shillings (over 11 million Frw).

It was a point that was raised on May 14, 2025, when the Director of Finance in the Office of the President of Kenya, Katoo Ole Metito, appeared before the Committee on Governance and Internal Security, in Parliament.

MP Fred Kapondi, who is on the Committee, asked Katoo Ole Metito how many advisers President Ruto has and how much they are paid.

He said, "This number of advisers is very large, they are many, it is good that you explain to this Committee the amount of money each one is paid."

In response, Metito said, "The average (of the amount they are paid) is that some are at the level of Ministers, while others are at the level of State Secretaries."

The salary of a Minister in Kenya is 594 thousand shillings, but if you include all other benefits, it will reach one million shillings.

The Secretary of State is paid 491 thousand shillings, and if you include all other benefits, it will reach one million shillings.
As soon as Metito mentioned the salaries of President Ruto's advisers, members of Parliament raised their voices, saying they could not understand how this kind of money could be spent on people who are sometimes marginalized in the government.

Presidential advisers in Kenya are paid Sh1 billion annually.

President William Ruto's office is expected to spend Sh8 billion this financial year.
