Qatar Pushes for Breakthrough in Congo M23 Peace Talks

Qatari mediator announced on Sunday that a draft proposal aimed at ending the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebels has been presented to both the government and the insurgent group.

“We recognise the challenges on the ground and hope they can be overcome promptly through dialogue and genuine commitment,” the official involved in the mediation process said.

This development comes just before the August 18 deadline, agreed last month by Kinshasa and the Rwanda backed rebels, to secure a peace accord.

Although the target date has passed, the mediator confirmed that “both parties have responded positively and agreed to the facilitator and expressed a willingness to continue negotiations.”

The direction highlighted in the Declaration of Principles signed in Qatar on July 19 had set August 8 as the start date for talks, with a final agreement expected by Monday.
