President Nguema’s Party Clinches Majority in Gabon’s Parliamentary Election

President Brice Oligui Nguema’s Democratic Union of Builders (UDB) has achieved a crucial majority, according to official results, following the second round of the parliamentary elections held on Saturday.

The ruling party is set to secure 55 out of the 145 seats in the national assembly.

The run off vote took place in 77 constituencies where no candidate managed to secure an outright victory in the first round, the national electoral commission confirmed.

The main contest was between the UDB and the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), the party of former president Ali Bongo, which had won three seats earlier in the process.

The victory marks a significant political boost for Nguema, who was elected president in April.

This parliamentary election officially completes Gabon’s political transition following the August 2023 coup that ended 55 years of Bongo family dominance in the oil-rich Central African nation.
