On Thursday, Niger’s military confirmed it had taken down a key Boko Haram commander during an operation in the Lake Chad basin, a volatile region where Niger shares borders with Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon. The area has long been a hotspot for fierce clashes between security forces and terrorist groups.
According to the statement, the Nigerien armed forces carried out a targeted surgical strike that successfully neutralized the notorious Bakura. Identified by the military as a dreaded Boko Haram leader, Bakura was said to have been operating from an island in the Diffa region of southeastern Niger.
