Kenyan President,
Dr. William Samoei Ruto, has urged the United Nations to support the East
African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC)
peacekeeping efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the wider
region.
The Head of State
and Chairperson of the EAC, made the request to the UN Secretary-General,
Antonio Guterres, in a telephone conversation on April 3, 2025, which focused
on the peacekeeping mission of Kenyan police in Haiti since last year.
He briefed
Guterres on the measures taken at the virtual EAC-SADC Heads of State meeting
on March 24, including short-term, medium-term and long-term measures to help
bring peace to eastern DRC and the region.
These measures
include measures to halt fighting and provocations in eastern DRC, facilitate
humanitarian operations, and dialogue between all parties involved in the
conflict in the country.
President Ruto
said, “I have asked the UN to support the efforts of the EAC and SADC in
implementing a path that leads the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to
peace.”
As he explained,
he and Guterres expressed their support for the region to achieve peace and
security, and for the conflicts between its countries to be resolved in a
sustainable manner.
