A fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of at least 153 people who gathered at the scene to collect leaking petrol. The incident occurred overnight in Jigawa state after the tanker overturned and caught fire.
Police officials reported that approximately 100 others were injured in the explosion, with many in critical condition. Despite warnings to keep the area secure, a large crowd gathered, overwhelming police efforts to prevent access to the vehicle. As people attempted to scoop up fuel, a fire erupted.
The crash took place in the town of Majia around 11:30 PM local time. Authorities confirmed that the tanker was traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe state when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The driver, unharmed, has been taken into custody for an investigation.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident, but many victims suffered severe burns, making identification difficult. Rescuers are continuing to recover bodies from the area, with some victims discovered far from the crash site, likely in search of help before succumbing to their injuries. Most of the deceased have since been buried in a mass ceremony.
Fuel tanker accidents are not uncommon in Nigeria, often attributed to poorly maintained roads and vehicles. In a separate incident, another fuel tanker overturned in Ogun state, causing significant property damage but resulting in no injuries.
