Morocco Edge Past Ghana in Penalty Drama to Set Up WAFCON Final Clash with Nigeria

Morocco have secured their place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Ghana at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The intense semi final ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, and despite both sides pushing for a winner, extra time couldn’t separate them from concluding the winner.

Ghana had the upper hand earlier on, taking the lead in the 26th minute through a remarkable finish from Stella Nyamekye. The Black Queens dominated the first half, creating more chances and dictating the pace of the game at their own level.

But Morocco came out fighting after the break. Just 10 minutes into the second half, winger Sakina Ouzraoui fired home the equaliser, bringing the hosts back into the game and sending the crowd into a frenzy.

The match eventually headed to penalties, where Morocco remained flawless. Evelyn Badu missed Ghana’s third spot kick, sending it wide. That miss piled the pressure on 18 year old Comfort Yeboah, whose effort was saved by Khadija Er-Rmichi, sealing the win for the Atlas Lionesses.

With this result, Morocco reach their second straight WAFCON final on home soil. They will be looking to lift the trophy for the first time and stop Nigeria, who defeated reigning champions South Africa 2-1 in the other semi final, from claiming a record extending 10th title.
