Police detained dozens of demonstrators on Sunday as thousands of Israelis poured into the streets during a nationwide strike.
The protesters are demanding an immediate end to Israel’s war in Gaza and the release of the remaining 50 hostages, with around 20 believed to still be alive.
While rallies spread across the country, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his right wing Cabinet that the military campaign would not stop.
“Our continued security control over the Gaza is just one of our conditions for ending the war, conditions that Hamas refuses to accept,” Netanyahu declared.
He added that Hamas must not only disarm, but that Israel would enforce Gaza’s disarmament “by taking continuous action against any attempt by any terrorist element to arm and organise.”
Israel’s plan to impose long term “security control” over Gaza has been firmly rejected by the Palestinians and sparked widespread international criticism.
